While working with Sabrina Verost on toilet training, I witnessed firsthand how a child’s confidence can grow through patience and consistency. For students with disabilities, especially those on the ASD spectrum, not being able to communicate their need to use the bathroom can often lead to frustration. Sabrina Verost thoughtfully used ABA techniques (Applied Behavior Analysis), modeled communication on the child’s AAC or speech device, and applied strategies tailored to the child’s individual needs to support their transition from diapers to independent toileting. Watching a child successfully communicate and use the bathroom on their own is a beautiful reminder that, with the right support and methods, achievements others may doubt are always possible.
I think we succeeded in toileting because we were consistent with it! We made sure they were drinking and taking them to the bathroom started every half hour and reading books and showing pictures of toileting little by little we would increase the timing taking them to the bathroom until we notice they were dry!
